- Two CDs of Public Domain and Shareware from APDL. Unlike other
- Libraries we have chosen to separate the contents by subject.
-
- PD-1 contains most of the 'useful' programs and applications, plus most of
- the text files and books (more than 100 novels, the works of Shakespeare,
- King James Bible, etc.). In fact, over 1,600 programs, including major
- packages like TeX and the GNU C++ compiler. This CD is approximately 95%
- Risc PC compatible.
-
- PD-2 contains over 500 games anf novelties, over 250 games cheats and more
- than 200 demos. There are also many popular music players with over 800
- Maestro tunes, 840 Tracker tunes, 1,000 Digital Symphony and more than 550
- digitized sound samples in various formats. With the exception of the demos,
- about 60% of which work on the Risc PC, this CD is more than 90% Risc PC
- compatible.

- | Hutchinson's Multimedia Encyclopedia *** £27.50 *** |
- | |
- ·----------------------------------------------------------·
- {£1}
-
- I saw this recently and was so impressed I've decided to sell it. It
- contains just about eveything you would ever want to know with a graphical
- 'front end', lots of full colour illustrations, good (fast) search
- facilities, and VERY easy to use (so ideal for kids). It certainly isn't
- dear at the normal price of £59, but at £27.50 it's less than half price and
- an incredible bargain. This is the Acorn version (beware of copies sold at
- apparently low prices which are probably the Windows version which only
- works with a 486 PC card) and it will work on any Acorn machine with a CD
- drive and 1Mb RAM
-
- Snags? Only one. This is actually the 1992 edition, and there aren't going
- to be any later versions. But probably 99% of the data is unchanged (it's
- really only the statistics that would need to be updated and some recent
- historical notes added) so I don't consider that of major importance.
-
- This really is an absolute must for anyone. In fact, I'll even go so far as
- to offer a money-back guarantee if you think it's not worth it and return it
- (in perfect condition) within 14 days!

- =================
-
- These were published by Dabs Press and now out of print. They were always
- very popular, well written and easily understood. Even at the original
- prices they were good value, but APDL prices are even better!
-
- Prices include UK postage, and for some books this is expensive because
- they're rather heavy, which does increase costs somewhat. If you want them
- even cheaper come to one of the events APDL is attending and they'll be less
- (best to phone first and I'll reserve you a copy).
-
- Outside UK carriage is VERY expensive, so I'm afraid you will have to
- DOUBLE the price shown (this icludes Eire).
-
-
- 'C', a Dabhand Guide - by Mark Burgess (version 3) *** £9.50 ***
-
- The cover price is £16.95, and even at that price it's worth every
- penny. It has over 700 pages and takes you through an entire
- programming course in C. It starts out with the basics and yet still
- manages to cover some of the more advanced topics. You don't need any
- previous programming experience to be able to understand this book.
- Although it was written with Acorn machines in mind it is not Acorn
- specific so lessons can be applied to other platforms, and differences
- between them are explained. Highly recommended.
-
-
- Artworks Made Easy - by Roger Amos *** £6.50 ***
-
- There are always books to help you use Computer Concepts programs
- because the manuals are so &^%£y awful. This little book will explain
- a lot of the features in a logical and concise manner that anyone can
- understand. It's a real must, and even the experienced user will
- probably find lots of things that they didn't know.
- Original cover price £14.95.
-
- Impression, A Dabhand Guide - by Anne Rooney *** £7.50 ***
-
- Again, intended to overcome the very steep learning curve that most
- people face when they get Impression and have only those cryptic and
- unreadable manuals. This was written for Impression II, but almost
- everything in it is ewually applicable to Style and Publisher.
- At the Wakefield show one lady picked this book up and, after a
- couple of minutes browsing, exclaimed that she'd had Publisher for
- over a year and had never been able to understand it. She said that
- she had learned more from a quick flick through this book than she had
- in all this time, and coudn't wait to get home and try it out.
- Original cover price £14.95
-
- Graphics on the ARM - by Roger Amos *** 7.00 ***
-
- This provides a general overview of graphics on all Acorn machines. It
- starts at the beginning, explaining how it all works, and even if you
- are not interested in the nuts and bolts of computers this is useful
- to help you get the best out of any of the software packages
- available. It covers many popular graphics programs (including !Paint
- and !Draw) and goes on to simple programming techniques. This book
- will be of interest to anyone who either uses graphics software or is
- interested in progrmming.
- Original cover price £14.95
-
- Budget DTP - by Roger Amos *** £5.00 ***
-
- You might be forgiven for thinking that if you want to produce good-
- looking documents or notices then you need a DTP package like
- Impression or Ovation. However, if you are on a tight budget (schools
- take note!) you already have tools which can do an awful lot for free,
- namely !Draw and !Paint. These are not very well explained in the User
- Guide, and many of their more advanced features barely touched upon.
- OK, no-one's pretending they can replace a package costing hundreds of
- pounds, but it really is amazing what you can do with the software
- that Acorn provided for nothing.
- Original cover price £12.95
